Artist's Description
This barn was built by a Trader named Jim Bernard. Jim married a true pioneer woman named Ada Pocahontas Cox in 1866.
Ada was born in April of 1845, and lived with her family for 10 years in Indiana as they planned their westward emigration. First destination was Iowa in 1855, there they worked and prepared to meet up with the wagon train.
They left Iowa in April of 1864 for Nebraska where they met up with the Oregon Trail wagon train. They suffered many tragedies along the way, cholera, ticks, ambushes, drownings, trampling, etc. Travel destinations included Ft. Laramie, Ft. Bridger, and Fort Hall before making it to the Oregon/Idaho border in fall of 1864.
Jim and Ada moved to their homestead in 1870. There they raised a family and made a living farming, running a boarding house and ferry service across the Snake River, named Bernard's Ferry, starting in 1882. Ada had nine children, six preceded her in death; one from scarlet fever in 1874 and four from diphther...

Mark Jackson has been an experienced photographer for several decades. He specializes in landscapes, nature and astrophotography (stars, planets, Milky Way, etc.) He is also an avid astronomer and uses a solar telescope as well as a Celestron telescope to capture astrophotography images.
